Encode and Decode Base64 Strings Online

Base64 is a widely used binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents sequences of 8-bit bytes using a set of 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, and /, with = for padding). It enables safe transmission of text, files, credentials, and data across network protocols that were originally designed strictly for 7-bit ASCII text (such as email systems via MIME and legacy HTTP protocols).

Seamless Unicode (UTF-8) Support

Standard browser JavaScript functions like btoa() and atob() fail with a Character Out of Range error whenever text contains non-ASCII characters. Our tool uses full UTF-8 byte serialization, meaning you can reliably encode and decode text in any language — including accented letters (é, ü), Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and modern emojis (🚀, 🎉) — without data corruption.

Common Uses of Base64 Encoding

  • Inline Data URIs: Embed small icons, fonts, or images directly into HTML, SVG, or CSS stylesheets without triggering extra HTTP requests (see our Image to Data URI converter).
  • API Authentication Headers: Encode HTTP Basic Auth credentials (in the format username:password) into authorization headers.
  • Webhooks & Web Tokens: Decode payload segments from JSON Web Tokens (JWT) or inspect Base64-encoded webhook notifications.
  • Email Attachments: MIME formats automatically convert file attachments into Base64 blocks to prevent corruption during SMTP transit.

Note: Base64 is an encoding scheme, not encryption. Anyone can decode a Base64 string instantly. Never use Base64 alone to protect passwords or confidential data without cryptographic encryption.
