Online Audio Compressor
Free Online Audio Compressor — Reduce Audio File Size
Compress and reduce the file size of your audio files online for free. This tool re-encodes audio at a lower bitrate to produce significantly smaller files, ideal for email attachments, web uploads, or saving storage space. Supports MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG and other audio formats up to 200MB.
How to Compress Audio Online:
- Upload: Choose an audio file from your device or paste a URL.
- Set options: Choose output format, bitrate, sample rate, and channel mode.
- Compress: Click "Compress audio!" and download the smaller file.
Key Features
- Adjustable bitrate: Select from 32 kbps (small, lower quality) to 320 kbps (large, high quality).
- Format conversion: Convert to MP3, M4A (AAC), or OGG Vorbis during compression.
- Sample rate control: Reduce sample rate for even smaller files (e.g., 22050 Hz for speech).
- Mono conversion: Convert stereo to mono to roughly halve the file size.
What are Bitrate and Sample Rate?
Bitrate refers to the amount of data processed over a certain amount of time, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps). A higher bitrate results in better audio quality but a larger file size. For example, a 320 kbps MP3 will sound richer and closer to the original uncompressed audio than a 128 kbps file, but will take up more than twice the storage space.
Sample Rate refers to the number of samples of audio carried per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). It determines the range of frequencies captured in the digital audio. 44100 Hz (CD quality) is the standard for most music, while lower sample rates like 22050 Hz or 8000 Hz are often used for speech or voice recordings where high-frequency detail is less important. Lowering the sample rate can significantly reduce file size, but will make music sound dull or muffled.
Tip: For music, 128 or 192 kbps MP3 offers a good balance of quality and file size. For speech or podcasts, 64 kbps is usually sufficient. WAV and FLAC files can often be reduced by 80-90% by converting to MP3 or OGG format.
